Choose a starting level from demonstrated foundations and the needs of the class, not age alone. An older dancer can still benefit from Level 1 when their hip hop or breaking foundation is incomplete.
Review the class context
Which style is the class learning: Hip Hop or Breaking?
What foundational movement and musicality can the group demonstrate consistently?
How long is the class and how often does it meet?
Does the instructor have the experience to teach and assess the selected material safely?
When Level 1 can be useful
Level 1 can provide a shared foundation for a group that is new to the style, has uneven prior training, or needs foundational vocabulary. It does not mean the class must move slowly. Adjust pacing and presentation while preserving the sequence.
Age changes delivery rather than automatically changing the level
Preschool, elementary, teen, and adult learners may encounter related foundations in different ways. Younger dancers often need shorter segments, repetition, visual cues, and play; older beginners can receive more direct terminology and context. Being an advanced dancer in another style does not by itself establish readiness for Hip Hop 3 or Breaking 3.
If the starting point is unclear
Review the authorized level overview and early lessons in Curricula. Ask Levels to review the general class context if you are unsure. Describe the group’s experience and foundations, without dancer names or completed assessments, even anonymized. Portal overviews are introductory guidance; formal placement criteria are still being refined. Educational guidance is not a diagnosis or a permanent individual placement decision.
