When a preschool class becomes unfocused, shorten the explanation, return to a familiar cue, or use a structured game. Calm, predictable redirection is more useful than increasing volume or adding a long correction.
Build a routine dancers recognize
Use the same basic sequence each week: enter, place water, find a spot, warm up, practice, play, dance circle, and dismiss. Predictability helps transitions feel familiar.
Use short positive cues
Find your spot in five, four, three, two, one.
Show me your freeze.
Hands in your lap; eyes ready.
March to the beat.
One dancer in the circle; everyone else keeps the groove.
State the action you want to see. Avoid labels such as bad, wild, or not listening.
Redirect with a job or a game
Invite a distracted dancer to demonstrate a cue, choose the next prop, or help count the group back to their spots. If the whole class is losing focus, switch to a seated rhythm game, freeze game, or another activity with clear boundaries.
Keep the pace responsive
Repeated distraction can mean a segment is too long, too verbal, or unclear. Simplify the task, demonstrate it again, or change activities while keeping the learning goal.
Follow studio policy
Use your studio’s approved behavior, inclusion, and safeguarding procedures. Do not improvise physical restraint, punishment, or exclusion. Bring in a supervisor or caregiver when policy requires it.
